A healthy ecosystem stays in balance. Removing whelks from this ecosystem allows their prey, barnacles, to overpopulate. The barnacles overeat their prey, the plankton, and the plankton’s population is unable to recover. Foodless, the barnacles starve. Prey need predators too!
